Default 1965 GTO 4 speed with Doug's headers z-bar issue

Hi, NEED HELP!!!!!!

Putting the 4 speed back in my 65 GTO and have Doug's round port headers installed. Doug's states that the headers will work with 4 speed floor shift and should use the factory z-bar.

I have the factory z-bar but the lower lever of the z-bar will not clear the last header tube. I am on the ball stud as far as I can go but the lever is hitting the last tube by about 1/4" so the z-bar will not rotate.

What is wrong and what can I do to fix?

Thanks for your help,

Mark

I had to find another Z-Bar and remove the lever that interfered and move it so that it cleared. Then I used a Heim pivot mounted on the Z-Bar to push the clutch fork rod, (to correct for the offset). 64 GTO body and Muncie trans at the time.

I think you have to use the later '68-'72 Z-bar for your car that had the bolt into the block for those headers instead of the screw in stud/ball. I remember reading something like that years ago but I'm not sure now.

Doug's has a disclaimer on their site about this. You need the later Z-bar to clear like AG mentioned

Does anybody know if the Doug’s D-ports have the same problem? Thinking of getting a set for my 65.

I've never run into a issue with the D ort Doug's headers. I've installed multiple sets on customer's cars

I managed to get the original z-bar in with the doug's round port headers. I removed all the screws from the headers so they were not attached to the block anymore. I pulled the bolt from the drivers side motor mount and jacked up the motor. At this point I was able to get the z-bar on the block ball and get it around the header tube. I also had to remove the zerk fitting on the z-bar because that faced down and stopped the header from tightening against the head.

Block is bolted back down to the frame, headers are bolted back to the head and z-bar moves with no issues.

Thanks for the suggestions

Mark

I should mention that I was trying to install JR Race Headers (Flat Collectors)
on my 64 GTO. NOT Doug's headers. Sorry for the incorrect info on this Dougs headers thread.
