I run 150 on the seats with my hyd roller cams and have made HP to 6800 in one of my V engines. Many guys are turning 7000 in BBCs with them and the lifters are pretty much the same.FWIW,Tom

Guys I appreciate the support. 5 or so months and I’ll be back on the road. In the meantime I have plenty to do to keep me busy

The hydraulic roller lifter craze goes back 20 years, over the 20 years it’s like 4-1 with those who’s had issues with hydraulic roller lifters. Many are sauce though China. The Lunati lifters are actually Morel made in China. The new craze is bushed lifter, which are cheaper to produce then needle bearing lifters.

Lou,John Callie’s make Morel lifters and say ALL are made in the USA.Comps are made in SoCal by Ron Shaver.Johnson’s are made in Michigan.Morel does make a lot of other companies lifters. If any branded hyd roller lifters are made in China I have not been able to confirm it in at least 3 years of searching.Tom

He’s the one that spec’d it for me
No idea where GTOFREEK (Paul Carter) is but I can tell you this...after that roller coaster ride I had when he built my engine, my car is running real strong. It was a helluva experience but their is no denying...he builds a great engine!

That is pretty good getting 15+ years out of solid rollers.
I bracket raced, 2 classes for over 10 years before retiring my roller cam 455 with Comp lifters. .
I am building a new engine and the old 455 had Norris SS roller rockers. I wanted to mock up a pair on the new High Port stroker to see what kind of pattern I could get across the valve stem.(not even close to working)
After years of the lash never changing I pulled the driver side valve cover and removed the rockers from #2 cylinder, engine has sat for 3 years.
There must have been .040-.050 lash on those two. The race before its last it ran its best time ever. Last race it was off 2-3 tenths.
Shut it down just in time.
Keep a eye on your engine. They can go bad fast with lots of miles-runs on them.
It will be a interesting tear down when I get to it.

Tom..I stand corrected . Lunati lifters , are actually made by Morel the material is sauce from China. one of the issues with Lunati lifters is the tie bar that holds them together breaks off. Went though who Ordeal with my Brother. It’s like some of the meat in the big chain stores, If the American company adds fat to the beef, they can say made in America even though the meat actually came from China or Brazil.

It certainly was caused by some type of bind in the valve train, and would have to say it was something overlooked by the builder. Rockers or not.

Let's see pics of the top of the valves and the springs on that cyl.

I always wondered about claiming X cam has too much side-loading of the lifter bore but wouldn't a thickness measurement be required to make that claim? Just spit balling but I assume not all lifter bores are the same thickness and some blocks might not be up to the task even with a smaller roller.

The suggestion on a SFT cam is a good one. Look up some on the old posts from GTO Karl.

I will take pics when I can but I promise you nothing looks amiss. It’s not Wayne’s fault it’s mine. I don’t think y’all realize how damn high I revved this thing.

When I was getting into GTO's in the '70's, most of the stick shift cars had replacement engines already at 10 years old or so. I ruined a 428 by over-revving and three of my friends blew up 389's by over-revving. The problem was, and is, is that a Pontiac will rev up like a small block Chevy, but won't handle it as well.
We didn't have rev limiters then. I still don't use one, but I drive like an old man now.
Rev-limiters are a VERY good idea when operating VERY EXPENSIVE equipment.

30+years ago I revved the 400 in my '67 so high that the lifters pumped up and I lost compression in several cylinders. Revved to the moon. I parked the car that night, thinking the worst, but when I started it up in the morning to begin my 51 mile drive to work, all was fine and they had bled down again. That engine, cam, and lifters is still in my '67 today, working fine. I got lucky, but also, USA made parts are good parts.

Don’t beat yourself up. Looking back at your pictures and seeing that roller lifter damaged. I now think the lifter went away, I doubt over reving had anything to do with it. Even though it says Lunati it’s made by Morel. Both have know issues. Didn’t see the damage on other roller lifter on the adjacent lobe. Which is no fault of engine builder. A good explanation, when the cam on base circle and moving up the ramp that lifter wants to turn the tie bar prevents that from happening. My guess is it started to bind and took out the lifter, so could be a combination of both weak lifter bore and lifter going bad. It’s hard to diagnose from those pictures but I’d like to see picture of the adjacent lifter. If your up to it. I’m guessing it’s the luck of the draw on weather or not you get a good set.

Here’s picture of same lifter we’re tie bar came off, kind of showing weak tie bar set up, meaning it’s mostly likely not doing a good job on preventing that lifter from turning or wanting to turn.
