Your twin here, almost. Retired at 60 1/2 years old in Sept. 2021 after 42 years in the auto industry, mostly as a tech until the last 4 years.
Body is a little worn out, have hoist at home, etc. It took me over a year to get my head wrapped around the fact that all my time was mine....I didn't have to get up to go somewhere for the first time since I was 4 years old. It is a strange feeling. Now I'm spending time on myself, working on my newest GTO, reading, hiking, gardening, and spending the time I didn't used to have shopping for great food and cooking great meals. I can't believe it's been almost 3 years. Enjoy yourself. You only have one future, make it yours, not somebody elses.

Congratulations to you all in retirement that are not bored. I have been retired since 2010. Not having to get up out of bed and be somewhere at a certain time I found distressing. Thanks to members of PY my RAM AIR IV Judge has been done for about a year now and requires no additional work. I went out and got a job working 8 to 1 P.m. Do not particularly like it but it provides the structure and discipline I need. Little pay and no stress. Those that have businesses and hubby's that they can fully engage in are super fortunate. Now at 72 the physicalaness of anything always has to be consider, not fun. To all the rest of you congratulations on enjoying your retirement.q

It has been a Year today that was my last day, yes it took a long time to figure out that I don't have to do anything. No schedule. Well sort of, looking after Grand Daughter
and have a second one recently that we have been visiting ( does not live close by). Summer is here and car stuff has begun so busy with that. Really nice being able to go out early
with other friends and not having to try and get off early. Yard has never looked so good as it does now, I'm not a Yard guy but keeps me busy. We also keep
busy dealing with older parents that still live by themselves, for now, but require help driving to appointments. Bot over all it's nice having time to relax and smell the roses. nWe are not getting any younger so enjoy the time we have here. Thanks for all the well wishes and hope everyone finds their time to RELAX.

This post was started about a year ago. I responded early, but now it's a year alter and I'm one month away from turning 67 and still working. I work from home and have to go into the office 2 - 3 times a month, so I don't have to deal with traffic at all.

I came very close to retiring about a month ago. My boss wanted me to fly to Pittsburg for some testing, but I didn't want to fly. The company relented and me and another guy drove there and back, so I didn't put in my paperwork. I'm still thinking hard about retiring when I turn 67 in about a month.

I applied to cut my hours from 40 hrs a week to 24 hrs a week and it was denied. My boss said that it still cost him a full head count if I went to part time status. So there is no phasing out, it's going to be an all or none situation.

For those that have retired in the last year, how has it been?

Love it, your situation is one of the reasons I retired. Management does not give 2 cents about the staff. We are just a number to them to make them more money.
I have time to do whatever I want now, when I want. Took a while to slow down and release I did not have to get up to get to work, of=r feel like yo needed to do
something. I'm 62 now and enjoying 2 granddaughters. Life is short, relax and enjoy what time you may have left. You obviously have a Car hobby to keep you busy, LOL.
I'm doing more car related stuff with new friends. Probably do some tours next year.

I know this is an old thread. I'm a Federal worker and we just got an offer of 8 months pay to leave. I think its an odd way to reduce the force, but I'm taking it. 22 years Military, 20 civil Service, eligible for a pension in May, I think its time. I have an older house that needs work, so here's my opportunity.

I've picked a date (August 28, 2025) to be done, which is 148 working days away. I'll be 64 years old.

That'll be the second time for me as I retired from GM in 2019 after 40 years. These past six years I've been with Nissan.

I'll be reading and re- reading this thread often over the next few months.

I honestly do not think I will retire, unless health forces me to.

Turned 60 last week and I really sense work "keeps me young"; brain engaged and more physical. My outlook towards working has changed. My own pace type of thing, and no more accepting BS, but the exchange of intellect, perspectives, solving things, etc.... I still enjoy.

Not sure if all I had was my hobbies, travel (I have many millions of miles under my belt for career and personal), family, working out....would feel the same or be as fulfilling. Semi afraid I would be bored.

Retirement boils down to: Can you afford it? Do you WANT to retire? and What the hell and I going to do all day? I retired at 60 and can't believe 10 yrs. have passed! We haven't traveled extensively or volunteered very much, but it was like yesterday!

Kinda figured I would be bored and not know what to do with my time, but seem to keep myself fairly busy, walking every day, Unless weather says No. Little yard work,
and coffee night with car buddy's 2 times a week. Summer we are busy with car functions, and now have 2 granddaughters with another on the way, all are close to home.
Will be 2 years for me in June. Do a little car work on the side to keep my mind a little active, nothing big, just brakes and oil changes. Wife has a fairly good pension, I only have
a small amount of Government pension (in Canada) they have Canadian Pension plan that everyone pays into and at 60 you can start taking it. 65 One can take OAP or Old Age Pension, ªalso
Government) so between the 2 one would pull in around 2g a month.

I retired 8 years ago from full time employment, but continued working part time until the end of last year.

I am now completely retired after 63 continuous years of always having a job of some kind (I started working in 2nd grade).

My last day of work was Dec 30th. On the 31st we went to the MN Wild game and bright and early we were at the airport heading to Myrtle Beach to celebrate our 52nd wedding anniversary. We currently have the following additional trips planned for 2025:

March - Yuma, AZ (grandson coming home from Okinawa to attend Weapons Technology Instructor School). There is a big airshow there just before the start of his school.

March/April - Branson, MO - Golf and Music

End of April - Yuma, AX again - grandson's graduation

June - Nashville - CMA Fest - Smokey Mountains

September - Black HIlls for the Buffalo roundup

Don't know where we'll go in late fall/early winter - but plenty of time to figure that out....

I just signed my paperwork to retire. The official date is April 1st. I’ve been off of work since the first week of December due to having a full knee replacement. So I’ve been in pre-retirement mode for a couple of months now. I’ve been a little bored mostly because I couldn’t do much till my knee healed up. It’s much better but I don’t think I could do 8 hours 5 days a week being only 9 weeks post op. The worst part will be paying for the insurance for a several years before I can get on Medicare. I’ve always said to retire as soon as you can. You never know how many years you have left to enjoy and you want to be in as good of health as you can be to enjoy it. All of my friends that are my age (60 in March), and have already retired highly recommend it but they don’t know how they found time to go to work with all of the projects to do. I guess I will find out soon. I’m trying to decide if I will go back to work till my official retirement date or just ride it out. I have an engine to put back together for the race car once I get the last part. It will be a lot easier if I have all day to do it instead of just evenings and weekends. I have a ton of projects to do soon know I won’t be bored, at least in summertime warm weather. Maybe building a garage should be my first project. Hmmm

Thanks John! Maybe an occasional visit here and there until my wife retires. We will see how things progress.
