Hey guys. I had headers installed recently and just went to change the oil filter and I don’t have the clearance between the header and the oil pan to get the filter out. Only way is to crush filter and that means I won’t get another one in there. I am using a standard wix 51258. I thought I recall there being another filter option that was a little more narrow, albeit longer? True or imagined?

You can run a K&P Filter, pretty small.

I can remember a friend in high school who had a Tri-Power 1966 GTO with a horrible set of headers like that.
We were in auto shop class and he couldn’t get his filter out either. I suggested unbolting the filter adapter from the block. It worked but it sucked.

I went with b-man's suggestion of removing the adapter, several times. After the first couple, I installed studs into the block to make it easier. I finally went to a remote filter set up to make it really easy, and with a larger filter.

And another to the list....
The NAPA 1045 (WIX part # 51045 ) which is a popular smaller filter. .

All of you who have no concern about running a smaller more restrictive oil filter are nuts, pure flat out nuts!
Your all concerned with the life of your motors yet installing a smaller filter that will only serve to make the oil bypass open up more often is the exact OPPOSITE of what you should be doing and looking to change to keep your motor healthy. If you not driving a pure factory stock show car then you should run a remote oil filter mount and run a 2 Qt filter on it, or even better yet two 2 Qt filters and then your having the added benefit of a oil cooler effect.

This is what I run in pontiacs with headers, even with the factory the oil bypass blocked, I have never seen a psi loss from the filtering.

Personally I run a remote filter set up because I have custom built headers on my F-body for additional ground clearance. It is hidden from view under the front fender.
When considering your oil system capacity keep in mind how much oil is in the lines to and from a remote mounted filter. On mine there is about 3/4 quart of oil. .

There is always the OHC 6
Filter is on the opposite side as the headers.
