I decided to break up the winter monotony and paint my cheap boring race helmet. I follow a couple of people on Instagram who do cartoon style paint jobs on everything from helmets to whole cars. I also see it called cyberpunk, anime, comic book etc. And I just kinda thought I could do it. Results came out okay for a first time. Definitely more pink than I intended it to. I for sure feel like I can do even better with lessons learned.
I also readily admit this style isn't going to be for everyone. Especially with this group skewing older, but it might be motivating for someone else to take a stab at customizing their own boring helmet in a different style. The MTN 94 graffiti paint was way better than normal rustoleum, and the paint markers were easy to use. The black spiderwebbed in a couple of places. Not sure why, no other color did. I did a long video with the whole process (not a tutorial as this is a first time for me) if anyone is interested. https://youtu.be/mxaB9jXhpA0 And this is a little short teaser cut up in fast motion https://youtube.com/shorts/G6JbpcLjPmo With the SA2025 helmet coming out, Im hoping the Simpson Bandit SA2020 helmets start going up cheaply. I want to try again with a more Ed Roth inspired design with some lessons learned from the first one. And you can do more cool stuff with the lines on one of the Bandits.

Looks damn good!
Custom helmets are always cool. My next one I'll be painting will essentially look like a lowrider. Flake, patterns, lace, fades etc etc.

I mentioned I wanted to buy a Bandit, or similar (Racequip Vesta20) but Ive also been considering buying an open faced Dale Earnhardt style helmet. When I do race videos it would be nice to be able to annunciate without my face being muffled. So Im going to buy a nice closed helmet for actual racing, and an open helmet for when Im messing around making videos. I always look forward to seeing all the custom helmets NHL goalies are wearing at the beginning of the season. The Nashville Predators consistently have awesome ones.

Lace, endless line , cob webbing , etc all were huge in the late 60s a guy named Wayne “woody” wood did a lot of the funny cars and stock and super stockers that way and matched helmets always.
My car was painted by woody

I'll say it out loud...the low riding groups tend to have some kick ass paintjobs. I too miss those bold graphics, huge metal flake, lace etc that were all the rage like Turbo69bird was saying....... I wish they would make a comeback!!!
That helmet is awesome man...and it is inspiring!

It’s funny they started restoring cars because all of them had been done up like that, plus headers and dual quads and stuff because everyone wanted to be like the racers ! The super cars . Now it’s nothing but a sea of restored cars and I’ll say it’s BORING! I like restored cars but how many stick firebirds and GTOs can you see at a show Regular people. Don’t want to ponder over how a am /fm car is rarer the n a Am car or wow that one was ordered w a reverb. But you take one of those tricked out cars to a show today and it’s surrounded by people. I know because I’ve done it and it pissed off all the stock liking car guys who had changed their cars FROM that.
