Hi all,
I'm in the planning stages of building a street/strip 455. I've been calling around the local area trying to find a machine shop that uses torque plates when the block is bored/honed. I talked with one old timer that says he's been building engines for the roundy round guys for 25 years and has never used and never will use torque plates when boring/honing cylinders. He claims that is an old wise tale that originated from the Chevy 400. He says because the head bolt holes are so close to the cylinder walls on the 400, they do cause a very (he stressed very small) hump in the cylinder wall when the bolts are torqued down. He said the hump isn't even big enough for the rings to loose the seal. he said his engines are good for 275# of compression (stoked 400). He claimed that if any shop advertises or recommends using torque plates, they are only soaking thier customers or using it as a marketing device. Your thoughts?
