I had the same problem as BVR421, with a Powermaster mini starter and a Protorque(?) SFI fly wheel. It was less than an 1/16 clearance on one part of the flywheel, I tried it anyway and it would sometimes come in contact with the startergear making a loud RRRRRRRR when the engine was cold and running a little rough. Well, now I do have the 1/8th clearance and no more nasty sound. I'm sure it was'nt too good for the starter! It still starts though...
