Overdrive and a hydraulic roller will make it much less of a compromise, even with 4:11 gears.
My '66 is a weekend driver. It will see the strip once in a while, but driveability has always been a high priority. Between the .64 OD with the tremec and a hydraulic roller (hmmmmm sounds a lot like a new GTO) make low 12s (maybe even high 11's) become a lot more civilized. Mine even has AC and it won't see the high side of 2500 RPM at 80 mph with 4:11s.
