Vented or Non Gas Cap

Which would be correct for my '63. The reason I'm asking is that mine has a vented cap. My wife is b*t*hing about the "gas smell" in the garage and the car has no leaks. I kind of like the smell of gas

Could the cap have anything to do with it.
