Thanks for the responses. I saw those pulleys at ramair. They are very nice looking and I was planning to submit an order with them soon for some other things. Hmmm.

Nonetheless, I still don't understand what's happening. The problem can only be in two possible places. Not much variability possible in terms of the water pump. It would be a problem if I had the wrong pulley, but my research seems to indicate that I have the right wp pulley.

In terms of the crank pulley, I guess I should check the part number, but there's not much variability possible there either. The balancer slid onto the crank nicely and seated. Is there any way the balancer could be in too far? How could that be possible? There's no spacer that goes between the balancer and the timing gear - - at least, I'm pretty sure there isn't.

Still scratching my head.
