Default Setting Timming on Big Blocks?

Ok - I have gotten confusing reply's to this question. Just simply, what is the best method/way to set the timming on a big block car? Please lay it out as simply as you can? I was told to set tottal timming first then I was told not to do that and I have bin told to set it almost 20 degrees different from various people? I just was wondering what you guys think? Is there a smart resonable sound way to do this when you have no Idea where to start from? Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way.
Thanks, Arkangel77

PS - its a 68 Firebird with a 427 Chevy motor, mild cam, edelbrock carb, street rod build, 10 to 1 comp, umm - thats all I can think of right now.
