Default Tahoe 4x4 front diff case.

So I've created an opportunity for a "teachable moment" this afternoon. I have a manual transfer case shifter on my 98 Tahoe.
I forgot to tell my girl to take from 4H to 2H this afternoon and she hit the interstate at 65 mph for 25 miles before it puked the case oil all over. She stopped, and I came along and put it in 2H. It took a couple of forward and backward transmission shifts for it to drop out, but we drove on with normal performance. I tried operating the 4H again later and it worked fine.
There is oil all over the front of the engine and lower frame area. I wonder what damage it could've done to cause it to puke it's oil? It's too dark to clean it and check it out.
