Default auto console shift indicator

I am trying to piece together a 69 auto console, and am thinking maybe I'm missing something(or maybe not),How can one tell what gear they are in from the floor console?I have the indicator plastic plate that has"P,R,N,D,2,1"on it,also have the backing plate that i understands lets a small amount of light thru to illuminate the plate.(don't have the light itself yet,but thats probably not important to the discussion)Question is,is there some kind of pointer that moves when you put the car in gear?Or does the light itself move to indicate a gear?Or ,is there something else that I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Craig
