Carroll had to be liberal in real life. this show was a big bash about a lot of things including conservatives. I know Chris does not want us to discuss politics here so will leave it at that.
Funny too, how you see things differently as you mature. When I was a little kid watching this, I thought Mike was always right. Now, politics aside, I see him as Archie does, a mooching son in law. Can you imagine your daughter marrying someone and having them both move in with you and eat all your food and do nothing around the house and argue with you about everything? I would have given hima big kick in the behind out the door. Get a job and prove yourself, THEN you can marry my daughter. Just a different perspective. All in the Family covered a multitude of subjects and it was almost always gut hurting funny.
