Default 67 dash pad studs and nuts

I have a dash pad I plan to re-dye and use in my car, but I can't seem to remove a nut on one of the studs...the nut just spins at the bottom and won't catch a thread even if I pull up on it. I've snapped a stud on one of these before, and don't want that to happen on this one because the pad is in perfect shape. Any trick to doing this or is it even necessary to remove the nut when installing the dash pad?
