2.56 rear to 3.08

Buddy has a 76 GP with a dead 2.56 rear. Will he see much of an improvement in off the line performance with a change to a 3.08 rear? He knows he will lose a little gas mileage. Will his speedometer be off then? Is it hard to change the speedometer gear in an automatic tranny? Thanks.
