It was an attempt to run turbos back then. It was mechanical FI, not EFI. Proper carbs will normally out power FI but the ease of tuning the EFI now far outweighs the difference or loss if any from carbs. I would do it for the better street manners the EFi affords us. For all out strip it's not as big of a deal. Although, from what I've read, blow thru carbs may reach a point where they can not properly atomize the fuel/air at high boost/flow situations. I don't know that as fact but have seen comment towards that. I'm sure time will tell as more racers find that limit, if it's a fact.
