97 G/P rear wheelhouse rust repair
I've owned a 97 G/P 2-door coupe (GTP) since new and it now has about 120,000 miles on it. Powertrain still runs great and the interior and paint still look great. About 2 weeks ago I started hearing a banging sound coming from the rear when driving on rough payment. Then two days ago the noise changed to a more metallic clunking and it was definitely coming from the right rear wheelhouse area. Last night I pulled back the trunk trim and found that the top of the right rear wheelhouse is rusted away and the strut is trying to push up and through the rusted opening. Right now I've parked the car because I'd hate to have the strut tear out at 70mph. Don't even feel comfortable driving it to body shops for their opinions. What I'm wondering is whether anyone else has had this problem and how did you go about fixing it. Is there anyone making a repair kit? Saw a YouTube video where a guy fabricated his own part and welded it in. But to be honest the fabricated part didn't look all that strong. For what it's worth the left side wheelhouse looks like new. Sure would hate to have to scrap a very good running and good looking car because of this. Any help will be appreciated.
Sorry if I posted this in an inappropriate forum. I just didn't see any other place it fit.
