I'm running the old GM points type distributor (68 400 engine). Just doing final setup for the test run / engine break in on my engine rebuild. I noticed the distributor gear teeth are a bit worn. Good enough for a test run on the engine test stand, but something I would like to fix before I do the final engine install. My goal was for an all original engine, so I have no intentions of going to HEI, nor going to a roller lifter cam. Engine is built to 400HO specs with the 068 cam and flat tappet lifters. So, what kind of gear should I replace the distributor gear with? Bronze or ???? I've heard you are only supposed to use the bronze gear with a billet roller lifter cam for Chevys (depending on the manufacturer). Not sure what is correct on a Pontiac. Using a Melling 54D oil pump (high flow) with normal oil pressure, not high pressure. I can't remember what the cam is made of, but it's nothing special in terms of material. Just an 068 grind. Bought it so long ago I can't remember anything more than that.
