It is true that I have never "competed" in a race where I've lost for going too fast...

I have no desire to short shift, use a throttle stop, or let out on the big end to run consistent.

That's the beauty of bracket racing.
If you have to 'let off' you didn't dial your car right.
(you beat yourself)

Nothing in rules says you can't dial faster than you can go.
(no worry of breaking out, just balls to the wall and hope you treed them)

I did enter a 7.0 index race several years ago and went a few rounds

There's a break out rule in Index racing, right?
