Marv, Not too sure about using silver solder on the die-cast metal. The melting point of the pot metal will be lower than silver solder.

What I have seen done (on a 1964 Cadillac Eldorado here), is he had the pot metal chemically cleaned and copper plated. He then drilled into EVERY hole and soft soldered the hole over, wet sanded the pieces smooth, had it copper plated again and repeated the process.

From memory, I think he repeated this procedure at least 6-7 times before it was suitable for re-chroming. Even then after chroming, some faults (blisters) were still visible and he had to rework a few items.

The end result is magnificent but this is on a very rare and unusual car (1800 built and hardly any over here).
