Default "05 Mustang GT Lower Ball Joints

My wife has an '05 Mustang, bought new, never seen snow, with 25,000 miles on it. She took it to Ford for an oil change the other day, and the service manager told her it needs new lower ball joints. This leads me to a few questions. #1 - I find it hard to believe that at 25,000 miles a pampered car would need ball joints; and #2 - Ford recommends changing the lower control arm and ball joint as a preassembled unit. They say this is how it has to be done. This sounds like bs to me. Why not just replace the ball joint if needed? I am taking it to a trusted shop next week for a second opinion and will probably do whatever necessary work myself. I would appreciate your thoughts and opinions on this. I know there is a lot of knowledge here.
thanks very much
