Default Fuel Pump

I had my car running in the garage, and I thought I ran out of gas, as it stalled out. The fuel gauge was near emty, so I put 5 gallons in it. I tried to start it and it would not turn over. I checked for spark at the number one plug and I have spark. I believe the fuel pump went bad. Is there anything else I should check before I take the fuel pump out? The fuel pump is at least 28 years old and I would not be shocked if it was the original. Thanks, Marc.
