Default Starter replacement gone bad:

Okay,
I changed plugs, cap, rotor and points. Basic tune up and seems fine. I also changed starter since the one in the car is old and tired. I have shimmed it the way the old one was and tried many other combos.
When I bump the car the index returns great but when I start the car it does not return? I have changed the shims and even added to a point of no contact. Also I have switched solenoids from another starter to try and trouble shoot.
Nothing helps and hate to buy another starter at 70 plus bucks a crack. The car and ignition was great before and find it hard to believe I have a switch issue. Any help would be appreciated as to what to look for.

Thanks
