My Uncle the Pontiac/Cadillac Dealer for 67 years used to say:

4 cylinder engine can live for "X" number of miles
6 cylinder engine can live for "2X" number of miles
8 cylinder engine can live for "3X" number of miles.

Lots of 7.3 liter diesels with 300K plus miles on them out there in service.
