66 Lemans - Carpet Cutting Under Console - Automatic Trans

I'll be installing an ACC carpet in my 66 Lemans soon - it has a factory automatic transmission. Did the factory mount the shifter assembly on top of the carpet? Any other tips for navigating that area?
