Default Staggered tire sizes

Showing ignorance here. When running staggered tire sizes, shouldn't 50's be on the front and 55's on the rear? I was looking at my tire sizes and mine are the opposite. I always thought the car sat high in the front, now I know why.

I was also looking at going from a 225 to a 215 to give me a little clearance from the rear well lip. However, they recommend a wheel width of 6 to 7.5. I haven't been able to measure mine yet, but they are 17-inch Crugers and I'm pretty sure they are 8 inch. Anyone ever put 215 tires on 8 inch rims?
