If you have an older (or original) heater core, you'll see that the end of the 5/8" hose nipple is "crimped" which acts as a restrictor. New heater cores haven't had this feature for many years. You should probably run a restrictor with a new heater core. A piece of 5/8" OD teflon round stock with a 1/4" hole worked for me.
