Hello All,
Long time lurker first time poster. I am 2.5 yrs into a rotisserie restoration on a 75 formula. I’ve removed all the rust out of the car including replacing half the floor pan, trunk, patching driver rear quarter, etc. I stripped the car down to metal, applied SPI epoxy to seal it up, did rough body work on all the panels (about 90% good but some spots I missed I’ll dial in when I block it out). Im reattaching panels, doors and other components to optimize the gaps before i lock it down and fine tune the body work. One thing I did is I elected to use 76 bumpers instead of the original 75. Personal preference but I wasn’t a fan of the black bumperettes. This leads me to my question/help needed. The front bumper I have had significant cracking and a big chunk missing from collision damage. As mentioned above I took this bumper down to its base material, applied numerous coats of SPI epoxy and used the 3M flexible filler to fill all the big cracks (the epoxy was able to fill a lot of the smaller ones). My plan was to keep using the 3m filler to build up the missing material where it was hit. I am going to create a few templates off of the good side using a medium gauge wire to use as a guide to match up the shape and contours. Is this the recommended approach to fix this issue? Another idea I had is maybe I can drill small holes in the current bumper and use a wire to build up some structure (kind of like rebar) to help hold the material while I build it up. But I’m concerned about mismatch in thermal expansion properties which may make it more susceptible to future cracking and so on. I’d appreciate some feedback on my plan and any tips to increase the chances of a long lasting repair. Thanks in advance does your input. Sort for the upside down pics. Not sure how to fix that. |
