Yeah, you're right, the average American doesn't get it. Sales prove it. On the Volkswagen front, I had a GTI, back in 83. Close ratio 5sp with the early model run shorter final drive. Crap car, but a ball to drive. Loved to feel the inside rear wheel lift on a fast turn. Before that I had a 79 Scirocco. Great little car in need of some horsepower.

They addressed the two biggest complaints by the old bastards who probably wouldn't buy one anyway. Tell them to go buy a Corvette or Mustang.
Once again the 04 cheerleading squad jumps to an erroneous assumption that if one doesn't like the way GM basterdized the GTO then that must mean one is a troll who wants some regurgitated retro rider. Hood scoops are out'...they are on everything now...along with spoilers. If GM is going to try to ressurect an icon then put some thought into it. The fact of the matter is they threw this thing together in 17 months on an outdated chassis based on a fleet design in a vain attempt to cash in on the renewed interest in musclecars. They came in way behind their competitors and so the empahisis was quick production and low costs. They tacked a GTO badge on it in hopes that would sell it for them with little or no thought to a target market. By the way: How many magazine covers has the 2004/2005 GM Monaro been on compared to the C6 Vette or 05 Mustang?

OK I've heard this "halo car" BS for about a year now. I didn't know what it meant before, but I think I have a handle on it now.
Apparently, the definition of a halo car is one that does not sell well, competely alienates the carmakers loyal customer base while remaining almost completly unknown to all others. Oh yes, it must also be a rebadged foreign car that is produced on the other side of the planet from the target market.
I guess the '88 "Pontiac LeMans" was a "halo car".
You can argue a "by design" low volume sales all you want, but you can not claim that this thing has drawn the public into the showrooms to check out the rest of the product line.
Two dozen VW owners who like this car... Hardly a marketing coup for GM!

Smart enough not to buy a 2004 GM Monaro. If your neighbors' dog leaves a turd in your yard and you go tie a bow around it to make it look it better it's still a turd. Putting a GTO badge on a butt ugly Australian import doesn't make it a GTO no matter how you dress it up.

GM has a $3500.00 rebate on it.

Your brilliance in posting as displayed on this board is only overshadowed by your abilities to add and subtract...

I can add and subtract just fine which I was I didn't buy one. If wnat to check math then add and subtract the resale value on a 2004 GM Monaro. Then get a box of tissues

Why does it have to look the same to be named the same - that's progress. No one is going to buy the same car if it doesn't ever change.
And no-one is going to buy a car today that lo oks like this

The "Jury" car I believe was the brainchild of a Canadian car dealer.
But, what's your story Mr. Monaro? You seem like an angry little boy.

quote:
Mr. PHS: In 1970 a Pontiac dealership came up with the idea of offering a "Jury" model as a low buck alternative to the Judge. It had stripes, spoilers, etc. but no endura bumper.Pontiac later endorsed this a option for the '70 LeMans Pillar Sports Coupe. Many people try to sell these as GTO's. This is what I was referencing as 1970 being the last good year for the GTO and only as with the Endura Bumper.

LOL.......
Champ nailed you with a 100% correct argument regarding a comment you made, proving YOUR ignorance on the subject, and now you are REALLY reaching.......
How many people have even heard of an obscure, dealer installed Tempest option called "The Jury"?
Endura was never an option on a '70 GTO, it was the only available nose you could get.
You are/were/will probably always be WRONG......
Give it up Joe..........

"they sold more in the last 2 months than all year"...compared to what? If you're looking at anticipated sales, volume vs. markdown, it's still pathetic. GMs Monaro would have done better under a different name than GTO. As a performance sedan it holds it's own. As a GTO it is a failure. The only ones that like this car are pre-pubescent tuners and they don't have the money to buy one anyways. Look for bigger spoilers, ricer air boxes and fart can exhausts on the 05 as options.

Why are the Grand Am, Bonneville, Grand Prixs etc called those names? They don't look (or generally even PERFORM)like their ancestors did.....
I suppose the '04 Trans Am looks a lot better than the GTO?

I agree that 04 GTO has a blending style, but so does BMW & Mercedes. They've had the same styling for years and those cars are boring and they have no attitude by looking at them either.
For those of you who think that GTO would make a great Grand Prix I disagree, the only thing I'd want from the GTO into the 04 Grand Prix, is the LS1 and the interior, everyone knows that GM makes boring interiors, but from the outside, the new Grand Prix looks a lot better then the GTO, and my dad owns one(04 Grand Prix Comp G.).
edit: forgot a few letters/words in there lol.

Compared to the total of the years sales up until Sept. That is when they started offereing rebates. Rebates that had been on all other brands of cars that competed with a GTO.
2nd, Dealers were not willing to deal on the cars treating them as gold. It happened with the Cobra, EVO, STi and the new C6. Smart shopers are waiting to buy to where they can get the best deal.
Again, it does everything better than a GTO. So now it has scoops like the 65 did and exhaust on both sides. They addressed the two biggest complaints by the old bastards who probably wouldn't buy one anyway. Tell them to go buy a Corvette or Mustang.
Go look at the people buying them and loving them, they aren't prebubecent. The only one in this thread is the troll that joined Nov.19th and doesn't have the stones to say who he really is.

Uhh, why would someone be on a board for years for the sole purpose of slamming a car that hadn't even seen production yet??? Whatever...The GM Monaro would probably have done well as a 2 dr. performance version of the Bonneville or as a new model all together.

Maybe Lutz needs to put a "GTO badge" delete option on the Monero and sell them for what they are....Monero's...
