The oil pump went out on my GTO engine. Fortunatly I caught it before any engine damage happened. The manual says that in order to remove the oil pan the engine must be removed from the vehicle. My question is can the pan be removed with the engine still in the vehicle? It looks like the engine can be raised several inches. Would this offer enough clearance? Anyone remove an oil pan with engine still in the vehicle. Engine is a 65 code WS 389. Thanks

Jim they basicly pulled the motor in those threads except for taking off the hood the motor was read to come out so pull it stand it roll it over and work standing up it's faster in the long run in .

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like pulling the engine is the only way to go. At least these engines are easier to pull than the engines in todays front whell drive cars. Thanks again for the advice and opinions.

I did it several times with engine in car, connected to automatic trans, but it is no fun. Can be done.

Hi, what signs did your engine give that told you the oil pump went out? On my car, a few times while driving at high speeds, the connector that goes on to the oil pressure sending gauge slipped off and the oil pressure went to zero on the gauge. When this happened, I thought the oil pump went out too, but it was just the wire to the sending unit. The problem is that the wire connector is plastic and the sending unit is very close to the headers. The plastic tends to get baked by the heat, which hardens it. This hard plastic combined with any oil made it difficult for it to stay on, especially at high speeds!

I raise this issue because it is pretty difficult to catch a broken pump before the engine lets you know in a big way that it is broken. I speak from experience, unfortunatly.

In my 30 years of GTOs No I tried believe me took longer trying than it took to pull the motor and do it correctly someone else may have a secret but I didn't find any can't lift it high enough unless you break it from the bell

I have a mechanical oil gage with a copper capilary tube. Noticed the pressure drop to 5 psi at idle and only 20 psi at speed. Changed oil and filter. Same results. Installed test gage in oil filter housing. Same results. Engine is getting lubed and runs fine. I don't think any galley plugs are gone, because, I don't see any external oil leaks. Oil pressure normaly runs 55 psi at speed and 20-25 at idle. I'm thinking that the regulator ball in the oil pump got stuck or the regulator ball spring broke. Also could be clogged pickup screen.

Don,

The thread was given to show that this subject had been discussed in the past and the answer to pngoat's question was while the oil pan can be removed with the engine in the car, it would be just as easy to remove it from the car than to leave it in.

Our host has some really neat tools on this site that allows people to search for similar topics. It is under FIND, that is all that I was doing when I posted my response.
