I'm trying to decide on what g body to look for, and i would like to know if a 400ci Poncho w/ TH400 trans would fit into it...or how complicated it is to get in to fit..

i dont particularily have a preference on what GM product (regal, gp, cutlass, mc), i would just like a G body (78-81 years) that i could stuff the motor/tranny in.

Any G-body is cool. You need to place the frame mounts in the right holes for the 301 type 78-80 cars. Use the 3 bolt motor plates and locate everything with the 350th on it from the trans crossmember. Very easy swap. I have a 81 GP that currently has a wore out 455 in it, but I am looking at redoing a 400 for it. Just need to make up my mind.

The 86-87 GP 2+2 is becoming more affordable, as some are now needing restoration. I think they are very cool looking! I have one, and I am waiting for time to do the same thing. After my 67 GTO, 66 2+2. Dave K.

Cigaro,

I had a 78 GP with 4 different Pontiac engines in it. No problems! It orig. was a 301 car. I just used the 301 block mounts and switched them between the 350's and 400's that went into it.

I had a lot of fun with that car!!! I even had a 68-72 A-body rear in it. That was a little weird. It was longer than stock, but fit. I did have a brake bias issue...backs locked up way too soon. I was young and didn't know about aftermarket prop. valves. Would have probably made all the difference.

Just me 2 cents!! Good luck!

Adam

What about headers or exhaust manifolds? I have a 78 Cutlass that needs a motor. This has to be tight, it's tight in my 79 TA.

JJake,

I ran the log type manifolds, then upgraded to the RA manifolds. I have also heard Indian Adventures sells headers for that application, along with any needed install brackets.

Good Luck

bmpmdf,
why go from a 455 to a 400? I have all 301's and thought about a 455, but seems like 400's are more common. Are they easier to find and build? I just want a weekend driver with a little Zip!!
Cigaro, For a G-body with Poncho power, I'd suggest the Grand Am.

Hey Cigaro,

a friend of mine is selling an '82 GP that had a 455 and a 4-speed.

It's a VERY clean car...sans engine and trans. I think the stick stuff comes with it.

$1500.

If you want more info let me know...

thanks for the info on the 82 GP but im tight for cash ATM - most of it is being spent on the motor =X

i did manage to find an add for an 81 cutlass in the local paper tho, $300 bucks w/ a bad tranny (don't need it so i don't care =/)...not sure on the body condition. I'm going to go check it out as soon as i can, so hopefully this weekend.

Anyone performed a swap into a cutlass? Pretty much all i need are motor/frame mounts? Tranny should fit (th400)?
