Just to let all of you know, dont waste your time with pertronix ignition, I did in my 68 firebird, and went nuts trying to figure out why it was fluttering through the carburator under a full load, thought it was the valves, adjusted them, then was told it was my carburator, then I called Jim Hand and he said, " Mike, take out the pertronix and re-install your points ignition" and now the car runs greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat!!!! thanks to Jim Hand I will now have a great summer.

Interesting. Sold quite a few units (and installs) without any problems.
I bet over 50,000+ units have been sold to date...... And all bad? Build it fast, build it right, build a Pontiac. http://PontiacDude.cc |

Pertronix ought to work.
However, I use HEI. Possibly it was just a bad module it can happen. Replace it under Warranty & re-install & you should be ready to go. We sell tons of these things with very few problems like others have said.

Put on in my fathers 67 GTO 4 years ago no problem. I know of a couple guys that had problems due to the ring rubbing the pickup.

I have the Pertronix HEI. It has worked great for about 4000 miles.

I have had a Pertronix module in my Firebird for 6 years. The car has made over 300 passes down the 1/8th mile and has over 30,000 miles on the street. I have had direct coil voltage arcing to the negative terminal of the module when a coil went bad and the module still works perfectly. Sounds like you got hold of a bad module. Glad things are going well for you though, I know how it feels to not be able to drive.

Have installed and sold a number of Petronix units on many brands of cars and have had no complaints about the unit and NO come backs.

I tried putting one on my Sunbird. Damn thing wouldn't fire. I was on the phone with their Tech trouble shooting it for some time. Bad module!
Dropped in an HEI and fired right up. My Rig's a little old, but that don't mean she's slow.

Well Iam glad all or most of you had good luck, its so frustrating when something like that does not work and causes a bunch of grief. I was worried I was going to lose another summer. Anyway, I called summit racing and they are more than happy to warrenty it for me, those guys at summit are very professional, glad I got so many responses.

Yeah, I realize that the Pertronix has been out longer, but the Hall effect design and stock external appearance (single wire to the negative side of the coil - just like points!) of the T.I. Specialties/M&H system is the way to go. PY sells 'em for $139.
I'm NOT dissing the Pertronix, heck I've never used it. But, using this system and a stock Delco coil, my Formula lights off at the first twist of the key EVERY time. Went 12.96 @ 104 on my 10th pass with the new engine! Gapped my R43TS plugs @ .040" BTW. Just my .02 worth! I installed a pertronix in my stock points distributor. Just set it up properly and you won't have any problems unless there is something wrong with the module.... which could happen to any electronic module.
Find out what the problem is before dissing a product. |

I have used pertronix for years. YOU MUST CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF YOUR COIL!!! If you don'nt have at least 1.5 ohms resistance, you must put a ballast resister in line. Doublecheck with pertronix on that figure i gave above. Also, make sure you have a good 12V source for the Pertronix. Do'nt use the original point wire as the resister in line will drop the voltage to 8-9 volts after the car starts!!

Ditto on trashing. My 66 GTO NEVER EVER ran better! Ask anyone who knows, really knows engines......points suck! After 4,000 rpm points blow! Duh, I knew that in 11th grade....in 1972!
Ever think the module is bad???????????/
