I have a 73 formula and am looking for a new exhaust system. I'm going to install hooker super comps but I don't know wether to get aluminized, stainless, etc. I also want a good fitting sytem as well. Which is best and why? Any help? I want it to be a 2 1/2 system mandrel bent. I was thinking of getting a system from PYPES with the X crossover but I think they only offer their systems aluminized. Any advice?

Can't anyone help? Who makes a good stainless system? Why is it better than aluminized? Is it?

Cant help with who makes stainless. Aluminized is just mild steel tubing with a very light alum. coating. It will rust quickly any place the coating is disturbed. On the other hand stainless will last vertually forever.

Without going custom for big $$$, I am not aware of who makes an over-the-counter system in stainless. I bought the Pypes 3" X system and am very satisfied with it. It, however, is not for eveyone. Ground clearance may be an issue and should be considered seriously on a daily driver. My car is not a daily driver. The Pypes system has a lifetime warranty. Ccass, correct me if I am wrong.

Here you go... Mandrel bent! $800 for stainless in any true dual configuration you want. 2.5" or 3". Headers also. You can also get a factory style single setup if you wanted.

Yes, we offer lifetime warranty on the pipes and the mufflers. Expect our system to look good for 7-10 years and last 10-15 years on a well maintained classic. (ie; garaged and not daily driven) We recommend you use a high temp spray paint on exposed welded areas of the system.

Stainless advantages; Will never rust.

Stainless disadvantages; Tinny sound, difficult to keep clean, generates underbody heat and cost.

The systems on the link above are high quality. However, they are not designed for Pontiacs. The crossover will require modifications for best fit. The tailpipes will require modification to use a factory type tip.

I think I'll go with a pypes system. I have Super Comps with a 3 1/2 colector. Will they fit good with the pypes system?

I belive they will, for a neat way to do your hookups try useing 3" to 31/2" reducers with stainless band clamps, this will allow for maximum ground clearence. JF

Now i have a problem. I just found out that the headers I got won't fit with my type of heads. They were made for HO/SD/RaII & IV type heads. I have 4X heads. I noticed when double checking to buy my system I was about to get the #RFE93BKQ or #RFE93CK2 set but didn't know what the difference was. I'm assuming it was just the muffler type. But now I think I'll be needing either new headers or new heads.

Formula:
Did you get Factory Castiron Headers (we refer to them as Manifolds) or did you get Longtube Headers (ie. Doug's or Hooker)? Where did you get them and will you be able to exchange them?

RFE93BKQ is a 2-1/2" system with Goerlich Bigmax 14" Mufflers. RFE93CK2 is a 3" System with Pypes 14" Mufflers. Both systems will fit Longtube headers or Manifolds (if you add downpipes).

The good bad news you have the wrong headders. The good news is now you can purchase Doug's Headers and a complete system from Pypes at a great price. With this system you will be a very happy person.

I was thinking of doing the same thing (getting Dough's headers with a pypes system) but is the Doughg's header #THY-341 the right type. If so why does it only have three pipes? How much can I get a set for? Bad news is I don't think I can exchange them because I already had them coated by jet hot.

I think the part number you have is for a set of Doug Thorley Headers. Not the same company as Doug's Headers. Doug Thorley Headers is a company that was owned by Dougs ex wife and sold to another company in the last few years when she died. Old technology, old designs, just plain old krap. Doug's Headers are new designs, fit great and perform well. They are four tube designs.

Oh, Sh** I had no idea they were different. All this time I heard you guys talk about them and how great they were but I didn't like the fact that they were a three pipe design. If you order your Doug's headers from Pypes, you need RFP115R or RFP115RC (ceramic)

Ccass, correct me if I am wrong but you said he needs to use RFP115R. Thats a round port header isnt it? He has 4x heads, I am not too familiar with 4x's but I thought they were D ports? I dont think he wants to end up with 2 useless sets of round port headers. If I am correct on this hopefully somebody will catch it before he orders up another wrong set. If I am wrong, well I had good intentions and now I will know better next time

whoops! Sorry, I read to fast. I saw HO/RA and assumed round port. The correct part number would be RFP115 OR RFP115C (polished ceramic)
