A few more words about paint costs. At the shop where I work we bought a gallon of PPG brand DBC base coat for a 71 GTX. The color was a plain, non-metallic red. Cost was $226. The following week I bought a gallon of light blue (non-metallic) for a DeSoto for $217. A few weeks later a gallon of B5 metallic blue was bought for a 70 'Cuda. The cost was $456!!! The paint store manager said the high cost was due to the pearl content the color requires. Since this is a rottisserie restoration and involves a color change AND the full underside, interior and engine compartment to be painted and cleared, we still need about 3 more quarts to finish it. I started out using PPG primers on this car, so it will be finished with PPG products. However, after a phone call we learned the local DuPont dealer could have sold us the same color in their top of the line ChromaPremier base for slightly over $200 a gallon.
Both brands are reduced 1:1, so they provide the same amount of sprayable product, 2 gallons.
So YES, do price comparisons, but also find out how much sprayable product you get for your money. And stay with the same brand throughout the primer and paint process. It pays. I found out the hard way.
