I am in the process of trying to restore my 67 GTO dash.

Could someone please tell me what color the gauge faces are, looks like gray but a little brighter.

Also is the dash itself chrome or painted black?
Mine looks like it used to be chrome but it was painted black and is flaking. I realize the insert is wood but the outside is what I am interested in.

When new the dash was completely chromed, then painted black everywhere except the insides of the instrument bezels which are some kkind of Blue?

The dash was painted black over the chrome, except the circular rings around the instrument bezel/openings were left chrome. The face plates on the instruments are a blue-ish gray.

Not easy to explain but... The dash was originally vacuum metalized to simulate chrome. It is actually aluminum. There are a few places in the US that do this. I could'nt find a shop in Phoenix, az.
Then it is painted a semi gloss black except for the front edges of the gauge holes the turn signal light holes and the brake light hole. In addition (This is the hard part) a ring aroung the entire flat surface is left chrome. If you are going to have the part vacuum metalized, that shop will usually paint it correctly too. You need to get some pics. I can't post any from here, maybe tonight.
I used Chrome paint.

I remember a poster on this forum who used a chrome magic marker from a art store. said it came out looking very nice.

I will paint it semi gloss black and make the trim rings chrome.

I have one (67) that I used chrome paint on and the silver leaf pen (available at craft stores). It looks ok for a driver. I recently was able to purchase a new core on ebay that had been completely vacuum metalized and am in the process of painting-properly masking it is a real pia! I matched the original grey-blue color with some rattle can paint found in a parts store. It's not perfect but very very close. (a little brighter)

My instrument gauges too (including turn signal, etc) are all black. Was it common for the metal to flake, or is it just likely that I have a replacement dash?

Since its been raining this weekend I thought I'd spend some time restoring my 67 dash. After several hours of masking and painting it is finally ready for the vinyl decal. It became painfully clear to me that the one I purchased does not have a snowballs chance in h--l of fitting-it is cut about 1/8" too short. This was the more expensive of the two I could find. Anybody have any ideas or leads on one that actually fits or am I stuck with this one which will be less than satifactory?

Sounds like you bought you insert from Ames which is manufactured by REM. I had mine for about 6 months before I went to install and discovered it didn't fit. They were happy to take it back although they were puzzled as to why it basically "shrunk". Anyway PY was backordered at the time so I got mine from Performance Retorations (Darryl Roach) down in TX. Getting ready to install now and as I overlay it on the dash it appears to be a very good fit. I talked to Darryl specifically about that and he was aware of the REM repro and said his would fit well.

BTW - I'm the one you bought your dash from on ebay - hope it works out for you.

I called Darryl and ordered one from him. He was quite helpful and offered installation advice that I'm sure will be useful.

I have a couple of pictures of my restored dash on my website. www.classicgto.com Click on the thumbnail picture of my plum mist 67. I had it plated at american plastic chrome, which I guess went out of business shortly after doing mine. Mr G's still does it. It was a PIA to mask and paint, but APC wanted $200 to paint it. The outer edge is semigloss black. Inside the bezel tubes, the overhang(where the speaker switch attaches), and the parts under all the knobs are the same color as the instrument panel. I had the inst. panel color computer matched, and mixed. It looks perfect.
