I just bough a centerforce throwout bearing from Summit which was said to fit all GM products. The old throwout bearing I pulled out is about 0.600" taller than the new one. Does anyone know which is the correct one for my application? This is going in a 67 GTO with stock bellhousing. Thanks.

Thanks for the info Shadowjack. Now I have a question for you...what kind of clutch are you running? I am running a Centerforce dual friction clutch and was wondering if the taller bearing that was in there before was causing the clutch fingers to overtravel and come into contact with the pressure plate (if that is even possible).
The reason I am looking into this is because after swapping transmissions the crank thrust got wiped out on my engine. I am just trying to figure out what happened, I have not measured to see if the bellhousing is off center, but will when I get the engine back from the machine shop. |

The pressure plate I have is a standard V8 piece from the parts store. I figure I'll get an expensive heavy-duty clutch if I ever blow the stocker, but I don't think that'll happen.
If you read the thread, you can see that the different TO bearings are made to compensate for the different pressure plate dimensions. If you had the wrong TO bearing, you'd have MAJOR issues trying to get the linkage connected--the leverage ratios amplify the mismatch. What you could do is mock up the clutch parts and bellhousing with the parts you have before you put the trans on. You can get a clutch pilot tool for about $5 to keep the plate in line while you check to see where your linkage will end up. |
