I was planning on running a stock camshaft in my 66 pontiac I was wondering what the specs. were on them though, so I could determine if they were good for my particular set up. My engine is a 1966 389 bored 60 over with 400 pistons. It also has 1972 400 heads with 1.96 intake and 1.77 exhaust and 96cc chambers (7j2 heads). Basically I made a 72 400. Will the stock cam be enough?

The stock 9779066 cam is a good choice for a heavy '66 Cat with a low-compression 400 engine.

Do you have the specs on that cam. I was just curious as to what a stock cams specs were. I was for a while thinking about putting the mildest summit cam in the engine but was worried it would be too much since I have a pretty stock motor.

i cant see why at least 068 wouldnt benefit that car...it doesnt have as steep a lsa but more duration, if u wanted a little more beef get a summit 2800 or 2801 cam

I used the Summit 2800 cam in a low-compression 400 that was installed in a '69 Grand Prix. The '69 400 was still standard-bore, it was freshened with new rings and bearings and I installed a pair of stock 6X-4 350 heads. The engine ran good on 87 octane fuel.

Ran a stock '72 intake/Q-jet and stock log exhaust manifolds with a 2-1/2" dual exhaust. The car was fully-optioned (heavy!) and had a TH400 and 3.23 gear. Took it to my local high-desert track (2800 ft. altitude) and ran 15.58@91 MPH, probably could have squeaked into the high-14s at sea level in good weather. Not bad for what was once 'Grandpa's Grand Prix'.

The 066 cam actually came stock in the '69 GP 400 automatic cars. The 066 is a pretty good bet in a '66 Cat with I'm guessing taller rear gearing than the 3.23 in the GP, but the 2800 would be good as well. The 068 or 2801 would be too much cam in my opinion, the low-compression 400 probably wouldn't like it much on the low-end in a heavy car with highway gearing.

Thats kind of what I was figuring. The catalina came with a 066 grind cam. I am assuming thats what the big 66 at the end of the cam shaft meant. I was concerned about over camming it with the low compression that my motor has.
