Clamp the two panels together like you thought.
Then use a saber saw to cut in the middle of the overlap.
Tack weld about every 2-3"
Keep this up until the panel is fully welded....
Very little warpage will occur then

Sometime back...........
I actually posted quite a few way's to replace panels.
Deep searching through the body shop forums should turn them up
