I recently installed RA III exhaust on my standard 400 1969 gto. ( quite a job ) I don't
get the car out much, but last week I took it for a good long ride. When I garaged the car and
quickly tried to start it again, all the power went out. after waiting 5 minuets or so lights came back but when I tried a second time to restart again the car blacked out without a sound. The battery is fully charged. I put heat shields on the starter/solenoid. Do I need a speical starter for RA exhaust? Could this be a relay switch?

It is probably still just a "heat soak" problem.

My suggestion: get a hi-torque mini statrter. If you are concerned about originality, do the following:

1. Get a re-built AC Delco starter with heavier windings (PY has them), along with a solenoid with a heavier spring.

2. Get a therma tec wrap for the starter. The bolt on heat shield doesn't cut it.

3. Get heavier battery cables.

These are typical symptoms of hot start problems.

Does that mean no lights, radio, etc. or just the starter doesn't do anything?

If no lights, etc could be a loose battery/cables connection or the main battery feed from the starter's large bolt to the car harness is flaky. That harness also has a fusible link in it, that, if original coould be intermittent.

Yes, the hole car went out for 5 to 10 minuets.
Then the dome light, radio and everything came back on. No fuses poped at all. I have the starter fully rapped and a shield on the soleniod. Hoping the started doesn't need to come out. The motor has to be lifted to do so. Not fun!

It sounds to me more like a loose or corroded cable connection...they'll do just what you describe, you turn the key and everything goes black.

Take all the cables off, clean them and put them back together before you run out and buy anything. Do both ends of each cable. I have one of those little circular wire brushes specifically designed for cleaning battery posts and cables, they work well and cost only a couple bucks.

Sometimes the corrosion isn't apparent even after you pull the connection apart, so make sure all the connections are nice and shiny including the battery posts, and put a LIGHT film of grease, copper paste, antiseize or something similar on everything to inhibit further corrosion. If any of the cables have those bolt-on battery clamps from the discount parts store, toss 'em and get a whole new cable/clamp assembly.
