First & foremost, the shaker scoop. If you don't want to deal with finding (& painting to match) a nice 1977-up 400 scoop, you can do what I did & find a junk 400 (MUST be a 400) scoop-- NOT a 305 or 403-- and carefully drill out the rivets which hold the bottom plate on. Then transfer the bottom plate of the 400 scoop to your 301 scoop. My scoop tells the world I still have a "T/A 4.9" (well, within 3 liters anyway-- tee-hee!). The 301 scoop won't work as-is because the "hole" is designed for the smaller-diameter air cleaner & adds too much height anyway because of the shorter 301 deck. Hope this helps.

The transmission will bolt up and you won't have to play with the battery tray, fuel lines or motor mounts. The 301 distributor will also work for the 400.
The motor mount brackets on the 301 will work on the 400. The timing cover will work also, however the timing tab is bolted on the cover for a 301 and in a different position than the 400, which had its timing tab cast into the cover. The pullies from the 301 will work on the 400. You will need the balancer from a 400..the 301 piece can't be used. After consulting my parts manual, it appears that the alternator and power steering pullies are slightly different. So, you will need to get brackets for the power steering and alternator. As well, to make life simple, you should get the proper timing cover. In the for sale section of this forum there are lots of people parting out these cars and you should be able to get these parts pretty cheap. I can't think of anything else right now. |

Oops, I just re-read what I posted and I said:
"After consulting my parts manual, it appears that the alternator and power steering pullies are slightly different." What I meant to say is the BRACKETS are slightly different, and thats why you have to get the brackets for the alt and PS. Oh yes, another thing you will need is a 400 flexplate and can't use the 301 piece. |

Brackets are different as the 301 is a "short deck" so the distance between block/water pump holes(used for alterantor and P/S) and head holes are different. The AC brackets all bolt to the head so they work. the pulley look pretty close but easier to snatch the pulleys that go with the brackets you'll use.

I did the 301 to 400 swap on my '81 Formula last year. In addition to the harmonic balancer, alternator & power steering brackets listed on the previous posts, you will need both A/C brackets, flywheel, oil dipstick, dipstick tubes, pump to carb fuel line (you could use the old one if you're better at bending them than I am), intake manifold, valley pan, exhaust manifolds, throttle cable bracket, and a drop base air cleaner if you want to close the hood. The EGR and TVS are different also. The transmission & starter will bolt right up. There are probably other items I forgot.
You didn't mention what year your Bird is and whether the 301 is the computer controlled '81 version. |

Other items I forgot to mention before that will also need to be changed are the y-pipe, oil filter right angle adapter, & breather tube.
As far as the computer control goes, you can keep it to control the 400 if you want. That way you can re-use your existing carburetor, distributor, and wiring harnesses. You will have to add a fitting for the O2 sensor to the y-pipe or exhaust manifold. Others on this board will probably argue that you should scrap the computer control, but I like the idea. Computer control will help economy & emissions for normal cruising, and under heavy throttle the control is bypassed giving you full performance. If you do not have a donor car, the expense of finding all those parts individually will add up. You may want to consider just rebuilding the 301. In stock form the 155 HP 301 from '81 is not that much lower powered than the 180 HP 400 from '77-'78 and weighs a lot less. The 301 is somewhat over-maligned in my opinion. But if you want to rebuild the engine for a lot more power than stock, the 400 is the way to go. |
