Hi all. I have a situation here and would like to compare notes. I just bought a '70 RAIII GTO, equipped with the rally gauges. The temp never reads over 100...in fact it reads below 100 whenever the ignition is on. Based on photos of restored cars, I seem to have a weird setup: There is a 3 pronged terminal sending unit installed on the passenger side of the intake where I normally see a vacuum "tree" on "correct" cars.-- The driver's side has a plug installed ( a sensor with the top broken off ). ---- Now, I don't really care what SIDE the sending unit is located on, and I don't care about a missing vacuum tree, but soething doesn't add up here.... I see where a new "rally gauge" sending unit ( not the idiot light type ) has just ONE terminal stud, if I'm not mistaken...but my engine/car aparrently stock wire harness has a 3 spade type terminal connector that snaps on the 3 prong sending unit. --- What do I do to make the temp gauge function? Is the wiring normal? Maybe I'm reading too far into this. BTW, the oil pressure gauge works normally. Thanks for any responses. Tom

Hey Tom, there should be a green wire somewhere in the harness going to those sensors, that green wire is the temp sensing wire, if your car came original equipped with the rally gauge option, all you have to do is get a temp sending unit for gauges( not idiot light type) and hook screw it in the drivers side hole on your intake, and hook just the green wire to it, if it does`nt work then then either your gauge is broken or you have a broken wire somewhere on your car,or it did`nt come with the ralley gauge option , if it did`nt come with the option you will have to swap two wires on the instrument pod plug, ( if thats the case I will have to look up to see which wires need to be swapped, Forrest [email protected]

What you describe is actually the correct factory setup. The 3 prong sensor actually serves multiple purposes. One prong is to drive your temperature gauge, another prong is to drive the idiot light and the 3rd prong is to activate the TCS solenoid. Either your gauge is busted, or this sender is malfunctioning.

If you have lights instead of gauges, one of the three prongs on the sensor drives the idiot light. One of the other two is hot, and when the engine is cold or hot ,not normal operating temperature,it is connected to the other prong sending electricity to the tcs solenoid.Ground to the solenoid is supplied by the trans
