What is the best method to remove a rear window on a 68 Firebird. I have never removed a front or rear window and am fearful of breaking it. I need to remove it to do body work/rust repair.

On my '81 Firebird I used an old Army can opener and clamped a pair of vice grips to it. I worked my way around the glass from the outside then the inside. Had a friend help me lift it off the frame. You just need some type of either flexable blade or one that is bent to go in under the glass. I tried the guitar string meathod with no luck. I also tried a hacksaw blade with no luck, just wasnt stiff enough, kept breaking. A blade that will flex somewhat on a handle about 2 feet long would be ideal.

or two guys and a Piano string
One inside and one outside put the wire thur and saw back and fourth around the window to break the seal
Just did it last week for front and back windshields had the both out in 30 min.

or if your by yourself like I was......push wire thru,..then ball up on inside, and pull slowly around from outside with vise grips

you can also use this tool specially designed for windshield removal, I bought it as recommended from another post here and it worked great..although I also heard that the piano wire trick works really well too...

I used a piece of 20 or 22 gage stranded wire. You can find it in your local hardware store. IF you have enough reach and a long enough wire, you can do this yourself. Now for the real advice. Watch out if your window seam has molding studs. Needless to say I cut the window out nice and well, but cracked the window top to bottom went I tilted it out. It helped me make my decision on buying a new window, but if you plan to reuse the window it will kill your mood.

I have removed dozens of windows with the 2 man and a wire technique. it will work but often the wire will chip the edges of the glass. If weedeater string will hold up that is a preferably way to go for a one-shot removal. I had my glass guy get one the pros use of a similar style as seen on the link provided by dansgto72 with several different length blades. it looks like it will be a 'lifetime' tool and I can't believe I went this long without it.

I had the rear window removed AND resealed on my old 1972 Buick for $50. at safe-lite autoglass. Luckily, they said there was no rust under there and the seal had simply failed.

I would imagine that they would come and remove it for about half of that and you would not have the fear that I had of shattering it. I have heard more horror stories of the front windshield cracking during removal, more than I have heard of the rear glass shattering.
