What do you consider to be a good 4 speed manuel transmission with overdrive (4+1?). It's would go into a my 65 GTO, 462, with 9" ford rear. It is for street and strip use.

Question- can you adapt a T-56 6-speed to a Pontiac? 'Damn right it's a street car'

They are pretty strong as far as I know and have heard. There is also the Tremec World Class 5 speed. I have heard these are also very strong and shift nicely. I haven't used either one, just going by conversations I've had with folks who have. I have driven a GTO with the Ricmond ROD 6 speed as well. Very nice shifting, a little noisey, similar to an M-22, they are also very strong. Brakes?! We don't need no stinking brakes!

Here's one...
Summer 2002 Pontiac Tech Special by HPP Magazine, titled "Shifting Six"by Tom DeMauro. Step-by-step feature on Jack Blum's '68 GTO where the T-56 was replacing a TH-400. Bolt-in with the adapter plate sold with the trans at GM Performance Parts Dealers. Features the push-type clutch setup and does not require a computer to monitor shifting and speedo functions. Adapter plate is sandwiched between the trans and a modified Lakewood bellhousing. Includes info on crossmember and trans mounting issues. Includes source and part number inormation. Yes I did stuff a T56 in my 68. I did have to use a saws-all, but hey it's a modified car right? Some of the details are at Tiger EFI T56 Info. This is the backdoor link as I just had to relink out site to the domain name . Tim Dean (member of the Souther California Gathering of Goats 800-GTO-1964) has a Richmond 5 speed in his 64 and loves it. I don't recommend the T56 if you are going to have more than about 450hp and do any drag racing. My 68 is putting out about 520hp right now, but I do high speed road racing so the T56 still lives.

Just get the Tremec TKO. It is strong enough and has internal rails so no shft rods are on the outside of the case.

I have read that the Tremec will drop engine rpm at 70 mph from 3000 to 2000. Anybody had any experience with this? Will it help it run cooler at 70 mph with a/c on when its 100 degrees outside?

Ya the TKO has a .67 overdrive and drops the revs and temp nicely for summer cruising with the air on. Its a lot bigger than a borg warner and the shifter is on the top in the center requiring some modification to the trans hump sheet metal in an f-body. I guess it will require the same in a GTO. Probably not an option for a really nice original car.

I have a Richmond/Nash 5 speed in my 65 GTO with Hurst shifter, pretty easy install. I only had to 'lightly massage' one area of trans tunnel for rod clearance and trim the shift hole a little. I have NOT been real happy with the shifting, it seems real notchy. Part of problem is my shifting skills (consistent race shift 1 to 2 to 5th, missing 3rd). I have heard that the Long Shifter is better, but apparently no longer sold for 5 speed? The TKO II is available with a .83 5th Overdrive now, I just helped a friend install in his car and it is bigger and more work to install but seems to shift much smoother. I was considering switching to the TKO II. B-Man, how did you feel about shift smoothness on yours?? I should have you drive mine as comparison, if I ever get it back together...

sorry Tom Vaught I posted to soon - what do you think about your Nash shifting? Mine doesn't seem to loud. I see you are using a Long shifter too, maybe the Hurst is part of my shift problem?? thanks!

hey goathead,
It may run cooler unless of course your engine/ cam combo is lugging at that low rpm. The 3,000 cruise rpm would drop to 2,010 rpm (3000 x .67 od) or 2,490 rpm (3,000 rpm x .83 od). Tim Baker

Thinking about the .83 overdrive....I like the sound of the engine...
Does anyone have one of these in a 65 GTO that you kow of? http://www.kurtspontiac.homestead.com/Dannys65GTO.html

Goathead,
I can't think of a TKO II locally in a 65, but install would be same as the "regular" GM Tremec. Also I may now keep my Richmond. I spent the last couple days at SEMA auto show in Vegas, and Richmond Gear had a booth there. I spent some time discussing the 'doggy caca shift feel' with their trans engineer. Before I throw the Richmond away I will try a more expensive Long shifter and different fluid first. Good luck, Tim Baker
