I've got an electrical short. I took all the fuses out and put them in one by one to check. Found it at the 3rd fuse down marked cigar lighter. I disconnected the lighter, but still have the short. I pulled the main fuse box out and found it is an orange/black wire. My Fishers manual doesn't show the wiring for the main box. Anybody have the main harness code for a 66 LeMans? Help in Indy.........

The wire that hooks to the lighter should not be that long that you can't trace it back to the fuse panel. Crawl under there and start tugging wires. My guess is the wire rubbed thru on a sharp edge somewhere.

many moon ago...I had my lighter wire rub thru on my old harness. It rubbed on the Ground bracket If i recall.. Check that..........

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I've got a '66 also but have been using a '67 manual that came with the car when I bought it. It has block diagrams for every section of the electrical system and that's what I've been using and haven't had any problems up to this point. If you want to look at what I've got I'd be happy to email it to you if I can scan it without ripping it out of the manual. Let me know.

Thanks for the offer Bob....but i think i have found the problem. I checked the battery again and it was dry. That lead me to the voltage regulator. The contacts were stuck and it fried the water out of the battery. Also shorted out the plates. I'm headed over to NAPA to get a new one tonight and replace the battery. Thanks guys and keep on crusin!!

Glad you found it. Nice troubleshooting. The block diagrams are a standing offer. If you ever want them let me know.

Just don't get one of those Mexican regulators or you might be back doin' it all again. A real GM reg. would be worth the cost.

Be careful!!! That very same Lighter wire shorted out and burned up burning the whole dash harness and pretty much everything up to the fuse panel and even past it up to the horn relay/external regulator! That incident was the deciding factor to go ahead with a frame off restoration a couple years early Make sure you fix the problem correctly! -Chris
