Journal bearings are self-feeding so long as the load isn't directed too close to the feed hole in the bearing. The load bearing film will be thousands of psi pressure, the feed somewhat less than that.
The comprimise seems to be one of trading bearing area against viscous drag and good oil supply, and for higher RPM applications, one must be closer to the 'ideal' comprimise of enough bearing area to carry the load, but not so much that viscous drag will get the oil in the bearing too hot.
What is this 'ideal' comprimise....'haven't the foggiest, 'guess that's why P-dude has a very attentive audience on the subject....
