Does anybody know if the corvair 4-speed tranmission section will bolt into the tempest transaxle? I've noticed that the shifter style is the same and the case looks very similar. (I am only talking about the section that has the transmission, not the differential/bellhousing section) Has anybody done this??

why not buy a tempest 4 speed? It will only hold up to the 4cyc.The 326s came with a 3 speed or auto only. The corvair will be no stronger than the tempest 4 speed.Tom

I have used this place for corvair parts at the shop i work at and they have some very interesting things for the corvair transaxles. check out this link to see their saginaw 4spd tocorvair diff kit. they also have differential upgrades also. Not sure if this can help us ropeshaft folks but i thought i would throw it out there.

If you are looking for automatic to withstand some HP. Find someone in dune buggy's who still builds powerglides for hill climbs. There are some fairly hot buggies (500 hp V8 with vair powerglide transaxler) running at Glamis dunes. Last time I was there we were runing a alky injected Buick 215 V8 ( realy a 350 with rover 4.6 crank). 1100 lb. dune buggy. Talk about G force take offs. It ran a vair transaxler and never had any problems with it. Jay

I don't think anyone cryo treated anything in the 60's for a SD car, much less a production car.

I'd run 400+ gross HP on that gear in a 3000 lb race weight car after treatment. No worries. In fact, I'd say it's not much crazier then running 650 HP through a stock MOPAR 8 3/4 in a 3800 lb race weight car. Been there done that.

Someone less lazy than I will have to do the math.

Even with the turbo, torque should stay under 300 ft lbs, probably more like 275 foot lbs max. Is that too much? I have no experience with these transaxles...
I'm used to tinkering with the big cars

SDStanley, please keep me posted on your later corvair transaxle upgrade, that seems like possible solution.
63 Banshee,
Do you know how much the cryo treatment improves the fatigue strength? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

It will turn a '59 Forged Pontiac rod with a Rockwell rating of 18 into a '59 Forged Pontiac rod with a Rockwell rating of 35... roughly. That is after about 24 hours. The best part about this technology is that the hardness is to the core, if allowed the time to "cook." Other methods only treat the outside layer.

I was told by a engineer that the other problem is the design is bad for wear, the pinion is at the bottem of the gear.Im going to put 325HP in front of one and am REALLY worried about holding up.Tom

Just the 4 cyl.
Although if all goes well, it will be getting a T3 turbo I salvaged from the junk yard within the next 6 months...
By the way, thanks for the lead.

66 through 69 Corvair four speed transmissions were much stronger compared to the 60-65. These were based on the Saginaw four speed internals.
Will the late Vair four speed fit? I intend to find out- I have a 63 LeMans 326/auto which is almost ready, and my parts car is a 326/3 speed. I want to change the automatic car over to a manual and will see if it's possible to use a late Corvair four speed. I have an early Corvair four speed transmission I can use but- no drag racing allowed with that transmission!

the REAL week link is the ring and pinion gear!IF your going up on HP I would stay with the auto as the converter is like a shock absorber for the diff.I have a Xtra R&P and will post a pic.It is unbelieavable how small they are.Tom

Ken at East West said the 66 Vair 4 speed will bolt to the tempest diff BUT you will need to make somekind of adapter to hook the TQ tube to the trans and you will need the 63 stick shift TQ tube. You might call him as he knows a lot about the 61-63 transaxles.Tom

Haven't been able to find a Tempest 4-speed, but I see the corvair units for sale very often (relatively speaking, that is...) Do you have a source for a Tempest 4-spd transaxle?
