I am curious to how many members use a gasket with cast manifolds or not. (RA III aftermarket)
I did not use them when I installed the manifolds a couple of years ago. Now I have a leak at the center ports and am trying to decide whether or not to use them this time 'round. |

I used the metal head to manifold gaskets on my 1969 RA III TA. I haven't had a leak yet but I don't have many hours on it either. I'm concerned that the manifolds will leak at the exhaust pipe junction. I know you can put exhaust doughnuts at the junction to help seal it but I didn't.

I used the metal Fel-Pros sprayed with the copper sealer. No leaks to this point. Grade 8 bolts to 35lbs.

I have a lot of miles on since I bought the RA III aftermarket cast headers, and this is the first leak. But I still have the blue metal Fel-Pro gaskets that came with it, so I am wondering it I am better off with or without. If I can raise that side of the engine just a couple inches I should be able to slip on the gasket. I agree, that 2 bolt flange on the drivers side is a pain. I use a mirror when tightening it to be sure the flange goes on properly. This has proven to reduce the swearing when firing it up after re & re's.

I've installed about 5 sets, using only PermaTex Ultra-Copper sealant. None have ever leaked.

I have used the blue FelPro gaskets and they burn through at the center port after about 3 years. That is many street miles and strip passes. Other than that I have no leaks. Many on the board have seen and heard my car.

When I used the RAIII manifolds I never used gaskets and did not have any leaks. The manifolds were new reproductions and the heads had the exhaust side milled to clean them up when the heads were rebuilt/ported. Now have Hooker Super Comps and use (and reuse) copper gaskets. No leaks with these either.
