A few days ago I noticed a tapping/knocking noise and seems like it's coming from under the valve covers. Oil level is OK. I'm not sure where to get started. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Engine stetoscope to isolate the sound location. Alternative, hold your longest screwdriver against your ear and touch the blade to valve covers, block, etc. You should be able to isolate the sound using this method. Just be careful of wires and moving parts
If you can isolate the sound to the valve cover, remove the cover. You'll probably find a rocker off it's pushrod.

I agree with that method, but it may not be as obvious as a rocker off the pushrod. It could be a failing lifter. You should check for looseness too. If a loose rocker is found, just tighten the rocker. If it's already tight, you'll probably need to replace the lifters. Good luck.

first figure out which valve cover its coming from,once that is decided remove that cover.look for shrapnel(ie.broken rocker or bent push rod..)check torque on rocker arms to make sure none of them have backed off.if none of the above apply you more than likely have a collapsed lifter..hope this helps..Terry

Did you notice any change in the way the engine is running since the noise started?
