Hi All,

It's been a while since I have been here, but the 62 Lemans is finally back on the road (full brake overhaul and tune-up). When I picked the car up the turn signal was dangling from the steering column. Upon inspection, the turn signal switch shattered into 3 pieces and repeated attempts with fix it with JB Weld and bridging it with mini shims has not worked well. Also, it seems the signal does not cancel correctly, but I honestly don't know has the assembly goes together. Has anyone had to replace the turn signal switch and found a good source, or, does anyone know of a suitable replacement? I have been sifting thru junkyards in San Jose, and it seems that's the first thing a smart picker grabs. My goal is to get this done before the rain season is upon us.

I was going to fix mine, too, but the cheapest turn signal cam I've seen on ebay was $75! This must be a very common part to fail with a somewhat limited supply...
Do you have the shop manual? Section 9 has sparse info on the turn signal cam, but it may be helpful...

They redesigned the turn signal actuator for the '63 and made it even more fragile. I always thought the '61-'62s looked pretty bullet-proof compared to the '63.

Wow ! do i feel lucky, i found a brand new one ,still in the box in my parts car! just hope it IS for a 63 Tempest.

'63s are getting real hard to find and often go for a hundred. Here's what one looks like

I do not think 62 & 63 are the same for Tempest. I think in '62 Pontiac used a cable where the actual electrical switch is mounted up underneath the dash to the side of the mast jacket. In 63 the switch is mounted right behind the steering wheel. you might try Corvair in '62 they also used a cable controlled switch.

In 62 all that is inside the column is a lever pivot connected to the cable & a canceling cam on the back of the steering wheel. Better check your shop manual to be sure. Those old cables break all the time, the outer sheathing seems to crack & break more than the inner steel wire. But in either case you have to replace the entire cable assembly.

Peter is correct. The 61-62 uses a cam mechanisim to actuate a cable that moves the turn signal switch that is mounted down on the right side of the steering columb. The GM part # is 5950745 for the cancelling cam.

If anyone is looking for one, PM me & I will check my parts cars & see if any are servicable.

Poop what i found is Champ#127205 directional cam only.
any ideas?

Mark, If what you have looks like the Pic that TempestFugit posted, then you do have a 63 turn signal switch. I dont have any way to post pics, but the 61-62 is a round aluminum ring with a threaded hole on one side for the turn signal lever to go & several places for the springs & levers to attach that actuate the turn signal sw. I have not found a Champ cross referance list to check your number.

When I bought my 63 LeMans, the previous owner told me that a turn signal switch from a 64 would work. Is that true or false?

I never heard that a '64 would work. Anybody know? (Is there a repro for the '64?)
